WHILE THE bombing at the Boston Marathon may not have been a false flag event, it certainly had an interesting influence on the political discussion. Sen. Rand Paul, who staged a 13-hour filibuster in protest of the Obama administration’s use of drones to kill American citizens, said in an interview that he could possibly support the use of drones for police work in American cities.

Meanwhile, news that the Syrian government may have used chemical weapons on its own citizens brings the United States closer to war in the Middle East. Also: Deadly H7N9 flu spreads through China.

Even Catholic observers are not entirely certain whether his name refers to Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order, or Francis Xavier, co-founder of the Society of Jesus — the Jesuits.

IT’S BEEN an odd week. Following the surprise announcement of Pope Benedict’s resignation, a spectacular fireball streaked across the Siberian sky, injuring some 1,200 people when the meteorite exploded in the atmosphere with the force of about 30 Hiroshima bombs.

Besides that, a geneticist issued a statement claiming that she had solid DNA proof of the existence of a novel primate species: Homo sapiens cognatus – AKA Bigfoot.

Also: Killer asteroid in 2106 (or not, depending on who you believe); Pope appoints member of Knights of Malta to head Vatican bank; a seat for the Vatican at King David’s tomb; “Blade Runner” charged with murder; new outbreak of bird flu in Mexico; black magic in Africa; and Radford University offers independent study in necromancy.

IN A move that surprised casual observers, Pope Benedict XVI announced today that he is resigning the papacy effective February 28, 2013. The last pope to resign, rather than die in office, was Gregory XII in 1415, in the midst of a crisis known as the Great Western Schism.

What does this mean for the Roman Catholic Church? And how does this relate to the so-called Prophecy of the Popes, attributed to the 12th-century Irish monk St. Malachy?

P.I.D. Radio 1/20/13: More Adventures in Africa

ALGERIAN SPECIAL forces stormed a natural gas plant in the Sahara Desert Sunday, ending a hostage situation that reportedly claimed over 80 lives, including those of the 32 militants who attacked the plant last week. It is unclear if any of the hostages survived.

The group claiming responsibility claimed the attack was a response to military action against comrades in neighboring Mali, where French troops (with British support) and a pan-African force (with American support) are moving against Islamist militants. Although the attack was apparently planned long before the French military was deployed in Mali, the question remains: Who is telling the whole truth about Western military involvement?

Also: President Obama sworn in for the third and fourth times; horse meat in the burgers at Tesco; Senator Kirk sees angels; parallels between Rome and the U.S.; and the contentious year ahead in bioethics according to Wesley J. Smith.

Also: Pray for the victims of Superstorm Sandy — a nor’easter is due to hit New York Wednesday; a Russian sub skirts the East Coast ahead of Sandy; Staten Island borough president blasts Red Cross; DynCorp wins big Pentagon contract after “unsatisfactory” review; and a disturbing story we missed in late September about America’s use of the “double tap” — secondary drone missile strikes to target first responders who rush to help the injured after attacks on suspected terrorists.

That raises a very uncomfortable question: Who are the real terrorists?

P.I.D. Radio 10/28/12: A Drone Again, Naturally

IT APPEARS that regardless of who wins the United States presidential election nine days from now, our drone war against suspected terrorists (and anyone within an acceptable radius, from a collateral damage standpoint) will continue without interruption.

The CIA wants more drones and more places to launch them, the White House will still have a secret capture/kill list, and if you dare question the moral or constitutional justification for killing four-year-old girls over there to limit the possibility that four-year-old girls here get killed, well, you’re “a horrible moron.”

Also: Fiscal cliff ahead; head of Bank of England admits that banks don’t have enough capital; Sandy takes aim at East Coast; and something falls into a Mexican volcano.

Forgive us — we forgot to come back to the creepy story of the drone that “started its engine without any human direction, even though the ignition had been turned off and the fuel lines closed. Technicians concluded that a software bug had infected the ‘brains’ of the drone, but never pinpointed the problem.” Obviously, there’s a Cylon in your future.

Who takes the fall?

AN INTERESTING thing emerged into public view last week during congressional hearings and the vice presidential debate: The State Department and the White House are playing a game of C.Y.A. regarding the deadly attack on the American consulate in Benghazi, Libya. The question is whether President Obama or Secretary of State Clinton will take the fall.

Both parties seem willing to let the other do the honors.

Elsewhere: Turks and Syrians edge closer to war; Sen. Arlen Specter dies; Barack Obama’s “no god but Allah” ring; BBC film crew detained at Area 51; and the Brits develop anti-alien weapons.

Note: We received this email from Rabbi Michael Bugg on 10/15/12 which clarifies the point we tried to make about President Obama’s ring:

Shalom, Derek and Sharon.

Assuming you didn’t get the answer later in the show, the Biblical equivalent to the Shahad would be the Shema (Deu. 6:4):

Shema Yisrael, Adonai Eloheynu, Adonai Echad.
Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is One.

Obviously, I’m substituting “Adonai” (“the Lord”) for the Tetragramaton here. Alternatively, you could translate it,

Hear O Israel, the Eternal One is our God, the Eternal One alone.

The very next verse is, “And you shall love the Lord your God . . .” Yeshua quoted both the Shema and the next verse together when asked what the most important commandment is in Mark 12[:29-31]. From that I would argue that the Shema is not only the most important creed in Judaism, but that it should be to Christians as well–and that if a Christian were to have it on a ring (and I know several that do) that it would not be a problem at all.

The problem with a Christian wearing or stating the Shahad, even if it doesn’t contain the second clause regarding Mohammed (and in this case, I’d want to see the inside of the ring’s band) is that in Islamic theology, Allah is not only a general word for “God,” but is also the personal name of the God of Islam, in opposition to the Tetragramaton, which is the personal name of the God of Judaism and Christianity. Therefore to wear it or say it is to declare that there is no god but the one proclaimed by Mohammed–whose personal attributes as described in the Quran are precisely opposite of the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

Just my two cents.

IT SOUNDS like science fiction. Or possibly like something from the New Age movement. Discoveries from the world of physics make it appear that the universe is a lot less “real” than we think. And yet a careful analysis suggests that it’s all part of an elegant and unimaginably complex design.

Chuck Missler, president of Koinonia Institute, discussed how modern physics, while perhaps shattering our traditional understanding of the material universe, actually points to the Creator of the universe, the One who spoke it into existence: Yahweh, the God of the Bible. (If it all sounds too weird, maybe it’s because physics is weird.)
