VFTB 018: Constance Cumbey — New Age Hijacking of Evangelicalism

Constance Cumbey

THERE IS no greater threat to the Christian church in America today than the New Age movement. Why? Because it’s just a repackaged version of the old lie, “ye shall be as gods”.

Sadly, this lie has wormed its way into our churches. Too many believers are unaware of the many faces this lie presents, from contemplative prayer to political activism where temporal power is justified as a means to an end.

Constance Cumbey has been sounding the warning since the publication of her groundbreaking book, The Hidden Dangers of the Rainbow, and she shares with us some of the evidence that leaders among the New Age and prominent evangelicals have been working together behind the scenes for decades.

Thoroughly enjoyed your interview with Cnstance Cumbey. I wish she would have been mor pointed in her answers about what we should be looking for in a church. With all the false doctrine and unbiblical practice in the nation’s churches; coupled with the spiritual abuse that my family and I have experienced at various points n our life, thurch is not a safe place for us

God bless the work you are doing!

I am elderly, 77 years old. I am fearful for my grandchildren and a couple of my children. I consider myself a fundamentalist Christian. I do not know what church to attend or what web site to trust. I heard your review on PID and I am thankful that I have podcast like that to listen to. That has become a passion of mine. I surf the web looking for the truth, but am not certain where I am getting fundament Bible views.
My I sight is poor and I prefer to listen to podcasts. I need a list of false prophets and Bible believing ones. Can you help with this?
    Thank you,
    Rena Wainscott

    Good interview.

I’m a Sola Scriptura, Justification by faith Alone Lutheran LCMS.

My whole denomination is going down the toilet right behind the ELCA, they’ve given themselves over to pushing out faithful pastors and moving in church growth pastors.
This is coming from the top. They’ve gone Sola Cultura.

I grew up in the ELCA and it’s sad to watch. I knew LCMS was in trouble when they dropped Issues, Etc. from its talk radio station in St. Louis. Todd Wilken was my daily companion on the drive home for years (I even called in a few times). Wilken’s show is one of the best talk radio programs, secular or no, anywhere.

I am by no means a scholar, but I am an avid reader, albeit a confounded one. I’ve looked into various faiths in search of a better understanding regarding the nature of God and our purpose as creations, and naturally this led me to Genesis. I came across a passage, Genesis 3:22, that w/o any apparent room for misinterpretation refutes the basis of your introductory statement for this particular show and which is a theme I’ve heard repeated on your other programs, regarding the repackaging of the serpent’s lie in Genesis 3:5 by the so-called “New Age” movement. It seems so simple, immediate and straight forward. Have you addressed this in previous programs?

    Genesis 3:22.
“And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:”

    Compared with Genesis 3:5.

“For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil.”

Anthony, I’m not sure I understand your point. Lucifer promises his followers that they have the capacity to “be as gods”, which is clearly not God’s design. It’s a deception on Lucifer’s part to suggest that apotheosis is within our grasp. It’s not and Lucifer knows it.

  8. Anthony

My point was just simply that it wasn’t a lie. It may have not been God’s design but apparently Genesis 3:22 establishes that God acknowledges man became as gods in so far as being able to understand the concepts of good and evil.
Whether it was God’s design or not brings up another point. I’ve heard it said that we should respect, or at least not rebel against the authorities over us even though they are Anti-Christian, i.e., Romans in Jesus’ time, as ultimately it is God’s will that gave them power. I’ve also heard it said that Lucifer is the god of this world. Can you see where I’m going wit this?
With all due respect I don’t mean to poke holes in your perceptions as I think your kind of discourse is important, I’m just trying to make sense of your views by adding my outside perceptions. Admittedly I’m not a Christian in the sense you may understand to be a true understanding. I came to appreciate God more through the understandings of science than any particular belief system. The level of order and complication in our physical world and the overwhelming expressions of the spirit in the form of emotions and reverence must hint at some purpose. I’ve taken to feel that if God can create our world from the atom to the galaxy it is in no way beyond God to inspire a virgin birth and resurrect a holy man which in turn would inspire billions over the ages. At the same time I believe there is much to self-actualization and the ability to do right by God with the right understanding and effort. Grace and faith are not as crucial I think as the right effort and desire to do right by God. Like showing that your grateful for the blessings you’ve been given by your actions. What’s the saying? Talk is cheap. I digress but it is not often one shares these views and when it rains it pours. I hope you understand my meaning.

Anthony: I think I do. Your interpretation of Genesis 3:22, however, is open to question. Eating of the tree of knowledge may have opened man’s understanding of good and evil, but it most certainly did not make us gods. God banished Adam and Eve from the Garden before they could eat of the Tree of Life and achieve that transformation.

The key question is whether self-actualization to the point of apotheosis is possible. The Bible tells us it is not. Lucifer was lying (and indeed, according to Jesus, is the father of lies) by saying that it is.

We are, as Christians, called to obey “governing authorities”, but there is no command in scripture to obey the “god of this world”; on the contrary, our daily struggle is “against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places” (Eph 6:12) — in short, against the god of this world and his minions.

Peter put it this way: “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour. Resist him, firm in your faith, knowing that the same kinds of suffering are being experienced by your brotherhood throughout the world.” (1 Peter 5:8-9)

So yes, our efforts are important, but the bottom line is this: “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” (Eph 2:8-9)

I realize I strayed from the subject matter. What’s a good forum I can join regarding these subjects? Thanks for the replies.
