You’re right, we should be careful when it comes to calling out brothers and sisters. I have no desire to engage in flame wars with sincere followers of Christ.
Sadly, it appears as though a few of the discernment watchmen can’t tell the difference between warning against the occult and luring people into it. When my wife is labeled a purveyor of New Age mysticism, the discernment folks have drifted waaay off the mark.
]]>Thanks for the reply. I don’t mean to take issue with anyone’s right to disagree with the ministries I mentioned. It works both ways, however. I too wonder if some of Horn’s critics aren’t reading things into what Horn writes that he didn’t intend. But, while some have called Horn’s ideas “crazy”, to my knowledge no one of the critics cited above have called Horn a “fake Christian”, or otherwise called his faith into question.
Maybe both sides need to calm down a bit? Be more careful?
]]>You are correct about the Discernment Research Group and Apprising Ministries. I have a great deal of respect for them and their work, although it probably goes without saying that I disagree with their assessment of Tom, Chuck Missler, L.A. Marzulli, Doug Hamp, Gary Stearman, Russ Dizdar, etc. I understand the basis for disagreeing with their interpretation of the Genesis 6 paradigm, but calling them New Agers or accusing them of spreading the old “Serpent Seed” heresy of William Branham falls outside the bounds of legitimate criticism.
Having met with Tom on several occasions and talking with him in depth away from microphones, I don’t think he is taking the NAR line of being “God’s anointed”.
]]>But I can’t help wonder to whom Horn was referring when he spoke of “discernment ministries” who are “attacking” him and others at the conference. I know of a couple of discernment ministries who have criticized some of Horn’s views; sites such as the Discernment Research Group, Larry DeBruyn, Ken Silva and others. These folks are not “fake Christians” by any means. “Calling the church back to preaching the gospel” (as Horn put it) is something these sites are dedicated to. I wish Horn hadn’t been ambiguous about his targets.
As for “church unity”, the ones who cause division are not those who insist on pure Biblical doctrine, but are those who introduce “destructive heresies” in the first place, and they are also very often the ones shouting the loudest for “unity”!
As I said, I agree with some of Horn’s views, but I sure hope he hasn’t adopted the “don’t touch God’s anointed” defense. In my experience, it’s the last refuge of heretics.
