P.I.D. Radio 8/5/13: Spies of Life

SPIES HAVE dominated the news of late — the NSA spying scandal has revealed that the US government is basically tracking all our electronic communications. Today we discuss a couple of new revelations. First, CNN reports that the CIA had about three dozen operatives on the ground in Benghazi when the U.S. consulate was attacked last September. Why? They were apparently running guns, shipping missiles from Libya to the rebels in Syria.

What could possibly go wrong?

Second, a secretive joint venture of the NSA, CIA, IRS, FBI, and DEA called the SOD — Special Operations Division — is sending intercepted data to local law enforcement so police can arrest American citizens — who aren’t supposed to be targets of the NSA or CIA ever — for mundane crimes like selling drugs.

WE ARE expected to believe that the trailer for an amateurish film offensive to Muslims has resulted in widespread unrest in the Middle East and the deaths of four Americans, including our ambassador to Libya.

Yeah, right.

ANOTHER MYSTERY foot has washed ashore near Vancouver. This makes 11 severed human feet in the last four years. Police in British Columbia have ruled out foul play. (Huh?)

IT WAS a surprise to learn this week that the Department of Education has SWAT teams at its disposal. Don’t worry, though; they say they won’t break down your door at 6:00AM for late payments on your student loan.

Is it unpatriotic to ask why on God’s green Earth the Education Department has weapons?

P.I.D. Radio 3/6/11: Two Suns

A SENSATIONAL Internet story popped up on MSNBC yesterday, as a picture from China that appears to show two suns has circulated around the web. Don’t panic; this is a atmospheric phenomenon that’s been seen and photographed around the world for years.

Also: another teen hanging suicide in Bridgend, Wales; Rick Warren welcomes Tony Blair to Saddleback; British special forces captured by Libyan rebels; and the case against allowing condemned prisoners to donate organs.

THE AIDE who tweeted a misspelled alert for the president’s remarks on Libya today will no doubt hear about it inside the White House. However, we doubt the media, which would have ridiculed President Bush mercilessly for such a clueless mistake, will even mention it.

Elsewhere: starving eagles “falling out of the sky”; four nuclear sites found in Syria; US and Pakistani military chiefs meet secretly in Oman; and the Army deploys psy-ops against U.S. senators.

P.I.D. Radio 2/22/11: Tangled Webs

IT SEEMS another nation in the Middle East erupts with each passing day. Libya has nearly devolved into a civil war, and the Western media seems focused on the protests as struggles for freedom, and maybe they are. There is one aspect that is overlooked, however, which is that the first protests in Tunisia and Egypt were sparked by sharply rising food prices, which are being driven up by commodity traders — most of whom, we’d bet, don’t have to devote a big percentage of their income on loaves of bread.

Also: Iranian warships in the Med for the first time in 30 years; Saudi/Iranian showdown in Bahrain; CIA agent arrested in Pakistan; and the US paid millions for bogus intelligence software — and now covers it up by claiming “national security”.

P.I.D. Radio 10/4/09: The Octopus

Danny Casolaro

THE TITLE of tonight’s show is a reference to the conspiracy investigated by journalist Danny Casolaro. He believed it tied the United States government to the Inslaw case (a software company that accused the Justice Department of stealing its extremely powerful PROMIS case management software), the so-called “October Surprise” theory that Iran had held back the American hostages to help Ronald Reagan win the 1980 presidential election, the collapse of the Bank of Credit and Commerce International, and the Iran-Contra scandal. The scheme was so vast and complex that Casolaro referred to it as “the Octopus”.

Casolaro was found dead in a hotel room in Martinsburg, West Virginia in August of 1991, his wrists slashed 10 to 12 times. His death was, of course, ruled a suicide.

Casolaro’s story might have continued its slow fade into the dusty corners of conspiracy theory folklore, except that charges were filed this week against a Miami-based missionary to Honduras named Jimmy Hughes for the 1981 slayings of Fred Alvarez and two associates in Rancho Mirage, California. It is believed that Alvarez was killed to silence him before he could carry out a threat to expose financial improprieties and other illegal activity on the Cabazon Indian reservation in Riverside County, California.

Incredibly, what happened on Cabazon land in the late ’70s and early ’80s reaches around the world and into the highest levels of the US government — part of Casolaro’s “Octopus”. Central to the story (especially when he tells it) is the mysterious Michael Riconosciuto, now serving a 20-year sentence for production and distribution of meth.

Understanding “the Octopus” is like the old story of the blind men trying to comprehend their first encounter with an elephant: the parts you touch can appear to be completely different and totally unrelated. Running over the outlines of the case in about half an hour, we didn’t even mention mainstream media reports — published prior to 9/11 — that FBI spy Robert Hanssen sold an upgraded version of PROMIS to Russia, which in turn sold it to Osama bin Laden. It’s believed Al Qaeda used the software to penetrate databases and move funds between banks without being detected by US counterterror groups.

A PROMIS derivative was also allegedly used by Chinese military intelligence to steal nuclear secrets from the Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories.

So, like the Octopus, the tentacles extending from the modifications made by Michael Riconosciuto at the Cabazon reservation are many and far-reaching.
