IT’S SURPRISING how often otherwise respectable news outlets publish stories with little verification. Some are difficult to take seriously, such as the alleged werewolf prowling the streets of Ceilândia, Brazil, and some are intended mainly to raise questions (especially about human origins), such as the “Stonehenge in space” report about Comet 67-P.
We also discuss Buzz Aldrin’s interesting expense report for Apollo 11, advances in genetics that could lead to really creepy mind control, the Blue Moon Murders in Escambia County, Florida, and how Black Hat hackers have figured out how to get your washing machine to spy on you.
By the way: Derek was almost right about the Philae lander on Comet 67-P. The probe is looking for organic molecules (which means anything with carbon atoms), but the request of Professor Chandra Wickramasinghe to include a test for microbial life was denied during the planning stage of the mission 15 years ago.

THE TITLE of this week’s show is a reference to a wonderful exchange between a clothing designer and a host on the QVC shopping channel about whether the Moon is a planet or a star. Of course, it’s neither, but it led to a discussion of a panic 60 years ago when the U.S. government frantically searched for two “natural” satellites that appeared on radar, orbiting the equator at 400 miles and 600 miles above the Earth.
We believe the UFO phenomenon is real, but it’s not what UFO true believers think it is.

HISTORY seems to be the theme of today’s show, although that wasn’t our intent when we hit “record”. We talked about a couple of movies we watched over the weekend, which both featured missions to destroy an ancient buried evil that wants to emerge into the light of day to destroy mankind (and both of which starred Ron Perlman of the Hell Boy movies, oddly enough).
We agree–Mutant Chronicles was better than The Devil’s Tomb, which failed to deliver on the intriguing premise of a team of scientists stumbling onto the Abyss in the Iraqi desert. Even the frozen nephilim that was a dead ringer for an alien gray didn’t help.
Elsewhere in the Middle East: Iranian intelligence was intercepting, analyzing, and spoofing messages on Twitter, MySpace, and Facebook during the election protests, thanks to technology from Siemens and Nokia.
Also: the bones of the apostle Paul and the earliest known artist’s rendering of may be his likeness; a 40-year-old old cult tries an image makeover; and NASA suddenly finds the high-quality tapes of the first moon landing that have been missing for 40 years.

TONIGHT’S show is a whirlwind tour that touches three continents and the Moon. After a quick discussion of the weather (the Earth is cooling, so quit measuring our carbon footprints), we talked about the research that occupied Sharon most of the day: esoteric connections between the Kryptos puzzle outside the CIA’s headquarters, NASA’s new lunar mission, Egypt/Tutankhamen/Akhenaten, the Nazca lines, and Dan Brown’s forthcoming novel.
