Also: The ongoing bird flu disaster in the United States, a reoccurrence of Ebola in west Africa, implications of sacrificing religious freedom to gay marriage, and Rick Warren’s weight-loss guide named “Christian Book of the Year”.

]]>Also: “Baby Doc” returns to Haiti; bees fly out to sea; US Joint Special Ops Command stacked with Knights of Malta; and the Taiwanese create a video parody of Chinese President Hu’s visit to Washington, D.C.
]]>Elsewhere, Rick Warren has partnered with three doctors, including Oprah’s favorite Dr. Oz (all professing the benefits of Eastern mysticism and, in Oz’s case, influenced by the 18th century “Christian” mystic Emanuel Swedenborg), to create a purpose-driven diet plan. Will anyone at Saddleback Church object?

]]>WE PICK up where we left off last night: Rick Warren’s Decade of Destiny ties together word/faith, evangelical, and hypercharismatic dominionist strains of Christianity; banks stop foreclosures because they may not own the houses; Microsoft plans to ban “sick” PCs from the web; and a 4,000-year-old Aryan city is discovered in Russia.

]]>THE SKY over Norway almost literally exploded December 9, 2009, the night before President Barack Obama arrived in Oslo to receive his Nobel War Peace Prize. Experts claim it was a failed Russian missile test, but the timing seems a little odd.
Also: Rick Warren promotes contemplative spirituality (note: we didn’t mention during the show that Peter Scazzero is now distributing The Daily Office, a Roman Catholic and Anglican practice, through Bill Hybels’ 12,000-church Willow Creek Association); Americans mix spiritual beliefs; the 2012 deception; and author claims he’s found the entry to the Egyptian underworld beneath the pyramids at Giza.

]]>IN A move that’s clearly intended to send a message to Iran, the Israeli navy has sailed two of its most advanced missile boats through the Suez Canal and into the Red Sea. Only ten days ago, an Israeli submarine believed to be equipped with cruise missiles armed with nuclear warheads made the same passage. And the Israeli military will conduct long-range tests of its Arrow anti-missile system at a U.S. missile range in the Pacific Ocean later this month.
The message is blunt: “We can move nuclear weapons within range of Tehran anytime we want.”
Also: health care reform means cost/benefit analysis of human life; Tony Blair and his 12 apostles; the Euphrates River drying up; and the Episcopal Church USA now open to clergy of all genders and sexual orientations.
Here’s the link to the op-ed piece by bioethicist Peter Singer in which he argues for government rationing of health care.

]]>THIS Independence Day weekend saw protesters turn out, in a driving rain here in Indiana, at nearly 2,000 events to demonstrate public dissatisfaction with our government’s profligate spending. However, nothing would deter the major media’s ongoing effort to deify, or at least canonize, the late Michael Jackson.
Also: Michael buried without his brain; Al Sharpton plays the race card (again); swine flu riot at a Boston jail; Joe Biden says Israel can do what it wants to Iran; serial killer in South Carolina; serial cat killer charged in Florida; and Rick Warren preaches good works to a Muslim organization with ties to the Muslim Brotherhood.

]]>IT MAY BE just a coincidence, coming as it does the weekend of the G8 summit in Italy next month, but we couldn’t help noticing that President Obama, whose campaign was filled with messianic imagery, will meet with Pope Benedict just about 3-1/2 years to the day before the end date of the Mayan calendar (12/21/12).
Also: it appears the Ark of the Covenant will stay hidden; a Jewish/Muslim interfaith movement to build the Third Temple; Rick Warren addresses a conference of North American Muslims; still no nukes in London (and no apology from the Telegraph); more hangings in Bridgend; and the new game in South Carolina: Where in the World is Governor Mark Sanford?

]]>THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA have begun a new chapter with the inauguration of our first president of African descent. While we are genuinely glad to see this barrier finally broken, we are — as you might guess — skeptical of his ability to fix the economy, save our 401k, send our daughter to college, cure AIDS, reverse global warming, eliminate nuclear weapons, and bring peace to the world. Especially when you look at the people President Obama has brought on board to help him achieve these lofty goals.
We were also bothered by the blatant spiritual overtones of the “We Are One” concert last Sunday. U2’s Bono flat-out described the president as the answer to the world’s prayers, and the lyrics of Bruce Springsteen’s song “The Rising” were absolutely metaphysical. And creepy.
We also discussed an article by Amir Taheri that appeared last fall in Forbes. Taheri, author of ten books on Iran, the Middle East and Islam, wrote:
According to the tradition, Imam Ali Ibn Abi-Talib (the prophet’s cousin and son-in-law) prophesied that at the End of Times and just before the return of the Mahdi, the Ultimate Saviour, a “tall black man will assume the reins of government in the West.” Commanding “the strongest army on earth,” the new ruler in the West will carry “a clear sign” from the third imam, whose name was Hussein Ibn Ali. The tradition concludes: “Shiites should have no doubt that he is with us.”
In a curious coincidence Obama’s first and second names–Barack Hussein–mean “the blessing of Hussein” in Arabic and Persian. His family name, Obama, written in the Persian alphabet, reads O Ba Ma, which means “he is with us,” the magic formula in Majlisi’s tradition.
2009 promises to be an interesting year.
