THE hottest new do-it-yourself trend is genetic engineering. No, seriously; “biohackers”, like the community at DIYbio.org, want to encourage amateur biologists who’ve always dreamed of creating their own species.
This sounds like the premise of an apocalyptic sci-fi movie.

]]>MOST of us modern city dwellers take our food supply for granted. Hungry? You can run out to the 24-hour supermarket or fast food joint, call out for a pizza, or even stop by your local gas station, which probably does a healthy side business in snacks and six-packs. In fact, it’s hard to imagine an American city full of places with things to eat.
But it’s not quite as sure a thing as all that. There are very plausible scenarios that could result in a massive disruption of the very vulnerable chain that leads from the farm to your fork.
Agroterror expert Katie Thompson, author of the thriller Deadstock, and commodities trader Alan Kluis talk about the security of our food supply.

]]>WHEN Wall Street Journal columnist Brett Arends recently advised “Americans to start stockpiling food”, he was met with derision from the talking heads on cable news shows. But a global food shortage is something that was prophesied by Jesus through the apostle John nearly 2,000 years ago.
We see signs that look like the beginning of just such a shortage, from skyrocketing commodity prices to news that some Sam’s Club, Costco, and BJ’s wholesale outlets are limiting bulk purchases of flour and rice. This may be the first food rationing in the U.S. since World War II.
The bottom line is that this will happen sooner or later. The question is, are you ready? And we’re not talking about a full pantry.

And here are the verses Derek couldn’t remember:
1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
2 He was in the beginning with God.
3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.
4 In him was life, and the life was the light of men.
5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
John 1:1-5 (ESV)
